Training tips for a race

It’s another week of snapped back and this week we joined a group of kids to snap back. Now since they are full of all the energy in the world I thought it be a great challenge. Not only that but ADarryl works with them doing voice fit and performance training. So we decided to work out with the kids and it was a great time. I must say the next day I was pretty sore. We turned up the cardio and the vocals a notch.

Me and hubby of course continued our training and running through the park daily this week. The goal was to keep moving and not stop through the course of my jog. That goal was completed! It is all about setting your mind on pacing and for your legs to keep moving. I kept stopping a couple of weeks ago in between my jogs. But this week I have continued the jog without stopping through my course. The strategy behind being a runner is keeping a good form and a good pace so that you won’t feel uncomfortable and want to stop through your journey. Now things have been heating up and the summertime is here so lots of hydration is necessary. I carry around a 33 ounce bottle to finish through the day. This helps me to stay hydrated and not to get too cramped.

The other thing that is very important is to stretch before and after a run. I made the mistake of not stretching after my run the other day and my back was on fire. It is important that as we start to get older we start to stretch our bodies. And I mean above 30. Don’t think that older is 50 to 60 years old now, if you’ve lived on the earth over 30 years you need to be exercising or stretching your body before and after a jog. Especially when running on concrete, it is extremely hard on the knees and joints of your body so it is important to wear the right sneakers with lots of support. I have been training in my Mizuno Peachtree Road race Sneakers and they have been absolutely fabulous. They are super snug and they are very supportive on the foot. They are not the lightest pair of sneakers that I own but they definitely are supportive. Most runners harp on having a very light pair of sneakers for timing in a race however I am not too concerned about my time in this race. My concern is to get through the race without stopping and to feel good while doing it.

Big shout out to the kids at the Salvation Army Kroc Center. We had a fabulous time working out and taking things to the next level. I have a little boy challenge me on push-ups so my arms definitely got the work out they needed. Hey sometimes we have to remind ourselves that we still got it and if it takes a young 12-year-old boy to tell us, so be it!
